Renan Barao out, Joe Soto in Vs. Dillashaw for UFC 177
Renan Barao had a real bad weight cut for his fight against TJ Dillashaw. So bad it seems that while making the final cut in his hotel room he got dizzy getting out of the tub, slipped, hit his head and had to be taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. This takes him out of the title picture for UFC 177 and puts the UFC in a tough position.
The UFC had to find a last minute fighter already licensed and ready to weigh in to keep UFC 177 alive and somewhat interesting after yet another hit to its fight card. So the UFC looked to Joe Soto to fill in the challengers spot and make for an interesting fight. Joe Soto immediately accepted and now we have a new championship fight.
Now, if you don’t know who Joe Soto is, don’t worry, you are not alone. First of all, his nickname is Joe ”One Bad Mofo” Soto, right there he earned a couple of points in my book. Joe Soto is new to the UFC and UFC 177 was suppose to be his first fight for the promotion. He is a former (and the first) Bellator champion. His record is an impressive 15-2 and is on a 6-0 win streak, just to keep things interesting. He is a good fighter that seems to be improving… is he on TJ Dillashaw’s level? We will find out soon.
The best thing I can say about this fight is remember what they said about TJ Dillashaw before he fought Barao. They asked the same questions you’re asking about Soto right now. Look how that turned out. Styles make fights and someone relatively unknown at this level in the UFC can definetely surprise all of us.
